William Sullivan obituary

Services for William “Harry” Harrison Sullivan of Grass Valley will be conducted later.

Mr. Sullivan, 96, died Tuesday, March 26, in Grass Valley.

He was born on Sept. 1, 1905, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, to Samuel W. and Mary E. (Cramer) Sullivan. He was the youngest of 10 children. He spent his childhood years in Marion and Washington Courthouse, Ohio. He graduated from Harding High School in Ohio and was quarterback for the football team. He married Pelagia “Blanche” Josepha Jaszczenski on Sept. 14, 1929, in Detroit.

In Detroit, he managed a Woolworth’s store. He worked for the Cadillac Division of General Motors for more than 24 years until he retired in 1968, and moved to Chico where he started a boarding stable. He was a founder and director of the Handi Riders of Chico for 13 years before retiring in 1995. He enjoyed horses, playing cards, building projects on his “one-horse ranch,” and telling stories.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Blanche Sullivan of Grass Valley; son, Robert Sullivan of East China, Mich.; daughter, Pat Bernadett of Chico; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
