William Hullender

Memorial services for William “Bill” Hullender of Grass Valley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.

Mr. Hullender died Friday, Aug. 23, at home. He was 78.

He was born June 5, 1924, in Breckenridge, Colo., to Adam and Cora Hullender. He graduated from Grass Valley High School in 1943. He enjoyed music and played drums in the Grass Valley High School band, and was an Eagle scout. He married Virginia Caldwell.

He was an engineering manager for Bechtel Corp. for 38 years, retiring in 1985. He served on the Grass Valley City Council and was mayor for two terms. He also served on the Grass Valley Planning Commission.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hullender of Grass Valley; son, Stephen Hullender of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Sharon Mackie of Sacramento; and grandson, Michael Mackie of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Hullender.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
