WILBUR RUTH | TheUnion.com

Wilbur “Bill” Merrill Ruth died May 25 at his home in Carson City, Nev., surrounded by the love of his family and the knowledge and joy of a life well spent. He was determined to enjoy life while battling cancer for the last 15 years. He was cared for by his children when he died in his sleep. He was 81.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 7, at Reno Christian Fellowship, 1700 W. Zolezi Lane, in Reno, Nev. Cremated remains will be scattered at sea.

Bill was born and raised in Los Angeles. He graduated from Los Angeles Pacific College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II and the Korean War. He met and married Juanita Wade, and they had two children. After Juanita’s death in 1972, he met and married Dolores Hoffler in 1974, and the family was increased with the addition of Dolores’ children.

Bill was active with the Nevada City Elks Club and served as a Grand Exalted Ruler in 1980. He worked as a Manager of Technical Arts and retired from the Grass Valley Group in 1987. After Dolores’ death in 1993, he moved to the Carson City, Nev., area, where he spent his time customizing furniture, fishing, taking his neighbors out on his “party boat” at the nearby lakes, enjoying barbecues with friends, and traveling to visit his children, as well as places that were warm during the winter months. He loved to cook and was always fixing up something “gourmet.”

Bill’s endearing personality, great sense of humor, fun practical jokes, and ability to make people feel loved, accepted, and welcome will be greatly missed. The advice, counsel, and wisdom he shared with others will continue on in his absence.

Bill is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kathy Ruth of Jonesboro, Ark.; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mike Rydman of Everett, Wash.; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law Fred and Leslie Hoffler of Minden, Nev., and Don and Maryanne Hoffler of Nevada City; stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law Holly and David Tassone of Nevada City and Robin Hoffler and Jamie Seifert of McCall, Idaho, and 12 grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Circle of Life Hospice, 1575 Delucchi Lane, Suite 214, Reno, NV 89502. Written remembrances would be appreciated by his children and may be sent to M. Rydman, P.O. Box 13210, Everett, WA 98206 or R. Hoffler, P.O. Box 903, Donnelly, ID 83615.
