Where is the justice?

I hope enough people read Cindy Clark’s “Other Voices” column on Oct. 16. She made an excellent point about how safe our community is, or isn’t.

What has our justice system become when someone can allegedly point a gun in your face, threaten to kill you and be allowed to plea no contest to a charge of felony criminal threat? What happened to the gun charge? No gun charges were filed. As everyone should expect by now, the district attorney’s office entered into a plea agreement of no contest and a 60-day maximum sentence and probation. This has become all too frequent for Nevada County.

How safe do you really feel? Look at the recent home invasions and what the results have been. When someone is actually caught using a firearm in a threat, it is like it never happened. The chances that any one of us will ever be threatened with a gun are slim, and I am sure that is what Cindy thought. But if and when it did happen, I think most of us would expect more than what Cindy got. We do have a voice at the ballot box, let’s use it.
