They are known as the “bad boys of a cappella,” refugees from Planet A, which circles the star Cappella in the constellation Auriga – The Edlos are back!

Often playing to a sell-out crowd, these classically trained singers (opera, if you can believe it) from the Bay Area do very convincing versions of everything from pop to rock and beyond, to ancient music. One minute they are the Beach Boys, the next chanting monks. And they dress the parts, too. Jokes, costumes and gags meet some fantastic music.

The Edlos perform Saturday, 8 p.m.; tickets are $18. The group’s Web site is http://www.mascot2.com/edlos

Ellis Paul, a favorite of the Americana singer and songwriter crowd, returns to the center on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

With his songs regularly appearing in hit movies and on TV soundtracks (evidence of being pop friendly), Paul leans toward the realness of folk and, thus, has successfully bridged the gulf between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. He, in fact, helped ignite the folk revival of the 1990s because he was a leader in the urban literate folk-pop style of the Boston school of songwriting. He’s been called charismatic and authentic.

Tickets are $15. Check him out at http://www.ellispaul.com online.

The Center for the Arts is at 314 W. Main St., Grass Valley. Purchase tickets at Yabobo and Love Shack Records in Nevada City, at BriarPatch and The Book Seller in Grass Valley, and at Cherry Records in Auburn. Call 274-8384 or go online at http://www.thecenterforthearts.org for more information.
