Watercraft kills 3-year-old

YUBA CITY — A 3-year-old boy is dead after being hit by a personal watercraft at a Feather River beach.

Deputies said Monday that the boy was Dominique Lee Williams of Marysville.

Sutter County sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Zembiec said 63-year-old John Blanchard and 50-year-old Allan Minkema of Yuba City hit the boy when they steered the watercraft to the beach at 15 to 20 mph Saturday. He said both men had been drinking.

The child was standing in less than a foot of water when he was hit. He suffered fatal head injuries.

Minkema and Blanchard were booked at the county jail on suspicion of manslaughter and were released after posting $50,000 bail.

Zembiec said the boy’s aunt was sitting about a yard away watching with her 1-year-old child on her lap. The aunt’s boyfriend performed first aid on Williams until medics arrived.

Williams’ parents were not present when he was struck. Zembiec said the boaters did not know the family.
