Walgreens offers nothing new

I understand that we need to bring more business into our county, and I understand that when people buy property, they should be able to build whatever they want. The situation we have in allowing Walgreens to move in seems like an ethics issue to me.

Businesses such as Longs and Rite Aid – which have been here for years, paid their dues, supported the community, employed the families who live here and contributed to local events – are undercut by the decision makers and developers who make money on the sale. Then the developers step aside, and we all watch as, slowly, the smaller stores that have made this community what it is go out of business.

The brand new store, with another store just like it in every other town, has the wiggle room to have as many bad years as needed, as this occurs. There is an empty building in the Glenbrook Basin now. How will people feel when there are empty buildings that once contained businesses owned by their longtime neighbors?

I agree that Nevada County needs to attract new business. The kind of businesses we should be encouraging and enticing to come here are not the box stores that will continue to have minimum-wage jobs and place our longtime community members livelihood at risk. What will Walgreens offer that isn’t already here? Next will be Home Depot or Borders. Another drugstore?
