Vote for Measure R

Thanks for The Union article on 9/27 regarding the proposed increase in fees for the Penn Valley Fire Protection District (Measure R). The increase of about $37 for a single-family residence is vitally needed to add four more firefighters/paramedics.

The district now has only 3 FF/PM on each shift to run the ambulance and fight fires in this 92-square-mile district. Many of the calls are “back-to-back.” This often results in the response to the second call having to wait either for an ambulance to respond from Grass Valley (15 to 20 minutes) or volunteers to arrive from wherever they are. You should hope you’re not the second call if it’s a life-threatening problem!

I also want to clarify that the Resolution 04-3, passed by the Fire Board for Measure R, provides that the fees may be increased on July 1 of each year by (only) the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index, not more. In no event shall this increase exceed 5 percent for any year.
