Volunteering a chance to give back

The Feb. 19 article about Fred Hargesheimer’s decades-long volunteering is inspiring and is a reminder of the numerous opportunities our community has for “giving back.” Our local organizations are able to enhance what they provide, thanks to the thousands of service hours volunteers provide.

If anyone wants to volunteer but isn’t sure which organization might be a good match for her or his interests and skills, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is an excellent resource. At any one time, more than 475 volunteers are enrolled and contribute more than 75,000 hours to dozens of organizations. RSVP not only recruits and matches volunteers, it offers limited mileage reimbursement and some liability insurance. And the organization host a fabulous recognition luncheon every spring!

Charlene, who has coordinated the RSVP volunteer program for many years, is wonderful at connecting people with volunteer opportunities. Give her a call at 271-0255. We may not be able to match Mr. Hargesheimer’s record as volunteers, but we can try!
