Virtuoso guitarist brings trio to Nevada City

Gyan Riley has a couple of claims to fame: 1) He became the first guitarist ever to be awarded a full scholarship from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; and 2) he is a former Music In The Mountains Young Musicians winner.

In the years since, Riley has brought together elements of American fingerpicking, Indian raga, jazz, flamenco and virtuosic classical guitar playing to perform worldwide to some pretty good reviews.

About his newest CD, “Melismantra,” Philip Clark, writing in The Wire in January said, “… his refined guitar patterns and sensitive melodic hooks have unexpected power and draw the listener in. For the CD’s 55 minute duration, I found myself engrossed.”

Tracy Silverman and Scott Amendola complete the ensemble. Silverman has performed and recorded with a virtual who’s who of the rock, pop, new music and jazz fields and is considered a leading innovator of the electric violin. Amendola has toured and recorded with a vast array of stellar artists, such as Bill Frisell, Pat Martino, Paul McCandless, Jacky Terrasson and John Zorn, as well as having his own band.

The trio plays Saturday at 8 p.m. at The Odd Fellows Hall, 212 Spring St., Nevada City. Advance tickets are $15 and $20 at the door. Find out more at http://www.NevadaCityMusicEvents.com and (530) 470-9615.
