Virgil Richey

A memorial service and reception for Virgil Lloyd Richey of Biggs will be conducted at 1 p.m. May 19 at Seamans Lodge in Nevada City. Mr. Richey died Sunday, May 5, at home. He was 83.

He was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Kokomo, Ind., to Frank and Laura Richey. He served in the U.S. Army. He moved to Washington in 1948 and worked in a lumber mill. He moved to Nevada City in 1949, drove a school bus for five years and also worked for Davey Tree, where he drove a scraper clearing the area for Highway 20 between Grass Valley and Nevada City. He married Stella May Risener in 1948.

He worked as a laborer for 25 years for Hunt Construction. He moved to Yuba City in 1980 and moved to Biggs in 1999. He was a founder of the Nevada City Little League. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and playing pool.



He is survived by sons Lloyd Fording of Bakersfield, John Fording of Fresno, Ronald Sturgell of Auburn, John Sturgell of Oroville, Michael Sturgell of Nevada City, and Steve and Kirk Richey, both of Biggs; daughters Renee Whaley of Auburn and Sue Courdert of Linda; sister, Thelma Clevenger of Canton, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella, in 1991.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nevada City Little League in c/o Sorensen’s Affordable Mortuary, 587 Country Drive, Chico 95928.
