‘War on women’ cries demeaning to American women

In her op-ed, Nancy Eubanks seems to have a very low opinion of a woman’s ability to be responsible for herself and to think and act independently (“Don’t Let Your Freedom Tread On Me,” Aug. 4).

She is repeating the scripted talking points of the Democratic party that women are hapless victims of their reproductive system, and that either the government or employers must be responsible for providing free birth control for all women because they are incapable of making their own decisions, controlling their own behaviors, or providing for themselves.

Ms. Eubanks points to the progress that women have made over the past many decades, becoming “doctors, lawyers, scientists, astronauts” and Olympic athletes.

She is absolutely correct that women play an extraordinary role in American life — and amazingly, they have been accomplishing that for all these years, while being responsible for their own reproductive health.

But in the blink of an eye, Sandra Fluke (a 30-something law school student at the time) becomes the darling of the Democratic National Convention while bemoaning the “war on women” and how victimized she is because she cannot get free birth control.

Are we now to believe that women will suddenly stop taking advantage of all that this country has to offer and participating in these important roles if the government does not legislate for free birth control?

I fail to understand how the Supreme Court’s recent decision in the Hobby Lobby case is evidence of “the Republican party’s War On Women trying to make birth control so hard,” as stated by Ms. Eubanks.

Hobby Lobby objected to paying for insurance coverage of only four out of 19 birth control methods which they believed to be “abortifacients.” They did not object to paying for coverage for the remaining 15 methods.

If somehow that is not sufficient, all one (like Ms. Fluke) must do is go to the nearest Planned Parenthood Clinic (which receives Federal tax money) or your local drugstore to find free or low cost birth control.

There are even certain business establishments right here in Nevada City/Grass Valley which provide free condoms in their restrooms. No one — of any political party — is attempting to make birth control unavailable to anyone.

To say otherwise is a fiction, much as the non-existent “war on women” is a made-up phrase tossed around to discredit Republicans.

Objecting to paying for an abortion or an abortifacient based upon religious or moral beliefs is, in fact, freedom of religion, not “freedom from religion,” as Ms. Eubanks states.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states very clearly “Congress shall make no law respecting establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

The women of America are much more concerned about having a job, feeding their families, crime in their communities, the education of their children, immigration reform, national security issues and other issues of vital importance to our country and our families.

The Democratic theme of women as “victims” is demeaning and insulting to the intelligence of remarkable American women of all political persuasions.
