Pamela Meek: Real neighborhoods are real

What we need is a “Chamber of Neighborhoods!” Increasing visitors, while understandable, jeopardize our ‘Norman Rockwellian’ neighborhoods. We are being subjected to San Francisco’s Airbnb property owner franchise-like sprawl into residential zones.

There’s rampant reining in of short-term rentals here and abroad, (Vancouver, BC: 63 percent increase!). Our local businesses fought formula stores on every corner. Neighbors need to challenge unhosted Airbnbs citywide!

Only “yes” on Y prohibits renting entire unhosted homes, while allowing renting two bedrooms in your residence or a small separate unit on the property where you live.

Read conflicting information in currently adopted ordinance: #3: Owner or Manager has to live at property or in Nevada County” and (nonsensical) #7: This section does not and is not intended to permit an owner to use his or her property solely for hosted short-term rentals” … written either to confuse or impossibly mutually exclusive. How does someone live in Alta Sierra or on Banner Mountain and Nevada City simultaneously?

I prefer not to live next door to an empty house awaiting random arrivals and departures of unhosted short-term vacationers, no matter how lovely they are, how much money they’ll spend, how much TOT they’ll generate. Real neighborhoods are … real! Vote yes on Y.
