New editorial board brings more balance to The Union

I just wanted to compliment The Union on the announcement of your new editorial board for The Union. Your efforts to reflect this community and the diverse population and opinions of the community are obvious in the new board.

You have invited members who really do span the full social and political spectrum, which should create some very interesting editorial board meetings, but also help to make sure that your opinion pages reflect all sides of many issues. Thank you for responding to requests and criticisms from your readers and contributors with an open mind!

The recent edition in which you had two conflicting columns on the Hamas/Palestinian — Israeli situation side by side is an excellent example of “fair and balanced” journalism. Those of us who are engaged and involved (and frequent letter writers) are not looking for a newspaper that leans either left or right. We are looking for a newspaper that reports facts in an unbiased fashion, and that publishes opinions on both sides of the issues that concern us, and identifies opinion articles as “opinions” and not “news.” I definitely get the sense that you are making a great effort to move the newspaper in that direction, and I just want to let you know that your efforts are appreciated.

I look forward to the future articles/columns introducing the new board members. I would also like to suggest that when opinion columns written by a board member are published now and in the future, the authors are identified as a member of the editorial board. That was not always the case in the past, and the list of editorial board members is not normally printed in the daily paper.

Thank you again for your willingness to work with the community and your efforts to bring more balance to The Union.
