Jinx Larive: Medical marijuana, are we really that sick?

Nevada County has a total population of 98,000. If one is to believe the opponents of Measure W we must have the sickest population of any county in California, the United States or maybe the world. According to them, they need to grow tons of medical marijuana just to service the needs of the myriads of sick adults and children in our county. Of course these thousands of sick residents have no medical alternative. Traditional medicine that serves the needs of most of us will not work for them. It seems incredible to me we can have such a large population (thousands to use the tons of marijuana they want to grow outside) of individuals who desperately need marijuana to survive.

Somehow I don’t believe marijuana is their only answer and it is just an excuse to illegally grow and sell the weed.

As a mother, it also bothers me that they keep using children to make their case. Might be true in very, very rare cases but again it seems we have an extraordinary number of “sick” children in our county who can only be treated with marijuana. I question this. My other question relates to the parents of these children. Are they, or were they, drug users and could that precipitate their children’s problems? If they are really suffering could it be addiction?

We need a yes on Measure W even if it means thousands of our Nevada County residents will have to move to get their “medical” care. I wish them well — no pun intended.
