Gene Jovich: Column missed mark on marijuana
In response to The Union article dated Jan. 21 in the Family Focus section — the commentary, “Being told no may trigger the opposite,” by Hollie Grimaldi Flores lacks any common sense and reeks of San Francisco anti-establishment whose views are offensive, baseless and unfounded.
This article should have never been included in the “Family Focus” section. Flores apparently does not understand the difference between medical and recreational marijuana. Medical marijuana is what the current Nevada county ordinance addresses.
For clarification, there is no significant source of tax revenue from the marijuana industry in the future.
Tax revenue for other programs does not pay for the cost of regulating and administration of the program. The difference is paid out of taxes collected from all of us. It would be the same for marijuana. There is no big cash bonanza that will be provided to our community through taxes.
Also don’t forget the death and destruction of life and limb from driving impaired that impacts us all and marijuana would increase the statistics.
Limitations are imposed on property rights when others rights are violated by self centered members of any community.
Most growers do not follow federal, state or county laws or ordinances because they are profit driven.
We all have the right to personal quality of life and the safe, secure surroundings in our communities for the majority of its citizens. This is a value and freedom that must be preserved for everyone.
I think it would be great if you tried growing a plant or six.
Then you would understand it better when you can’t go out in your back yard, open your windows or have friends, family or guests over because of the smell of the plant for several months when it is ready to harvest. There goes your enjoyment of your home and quality of life that you and your neighbors deserve.
We will find a balance between all or none and the majority will determine what we do. The few who violate the reasonable needs of the community have brought a backlash in opposition to their selfish violation of the rights of others.
Your final point about a handful of “all white men, all over the age of 60” is demeaning to the outstanding work and stature of the elected members of the Board of Supervisors.
It sounds like you are racist, sexist and critical of the abilities of anyone over the age of 60. You may be surprised to know that there many men and women who spent many hours researching the state requirements of AB266 and made recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and they were not all over the age of 60. For instance, the Nevada County Counsel is a lady with a proven background, under 60 and a great asset and leader to our county.
You may not realize that what we are witnessing is democracy in action. It is easy to sit back and criticize the hard working leaders of our county and their decisions based on a multitude of information and their own research that affects our entire county. It is evident that you have not bothered to gather all the facts necessary to write any informed article.
Your article should support your friends, neighbors and community in their search for quality of life, protection of their children and their property rights.
