Truck fire closes I-80 at Colfax

A big rig transporting hay caught fire on westbound Interstate 80, approximately one mile east of Colfax, closing down all westbound lanes for more than an hour Tuesday.

The hay truck’s brakes caught fire at about 11:30 a.m., and the fire spread to the surrounding vegetation, according to the California Highway Patrol website.

The CHP closed the westbound lanes of I-80 at Highway 174, re-routing traffic from Secret Town toward Rollins Lake.

Eastbound traffic was affected by smoke drifting across the highway, according to the CHP website.

Numerous fire resources were dispatched to the scene, including aircraft and helicopters.

A loader and a dump truck were requested to remove hay from the highway and start the cleanup process.

One lane was re-opened at 12:50 p.m. with the second lane opening that evening.
