Trail closed for copter pad clearing

A two-mile segment of the Pioneer Trail near White Cloud will be closed for five days from Monday, May 15 to Friday, May 19.

The trail will be closed from where it crosses Highway 20 near White Cloud to the Equestrian Staging Area near the Washington Overlook. The closure will allow tree removal near the Forest Service firefighting helicopter pad for safer helicopter operations.

“The TNF helicopter is used to drop firefighters and supplies near a wildfire. High winds, emergency operations, and heavy loads can make landing and take-off difficult for the helicopter. Removing trees downslope of the helipad will provide an important safety provision in case something goes wrong. This will also give us the capacity at the site for safer landings of the CalStar Emergency Medical helicopter,” said Don Will, Assistant Fire and Aviation Chief, Tahoe National Forest.
