Answers

1. Yes, in February of 1872, the state Legislature appropriated $200 per month for two years. In March of 1876 it was reduced to $100 per month, and the last seven years of his life, he drew no pension or relief from the state. He died in 1885, alone in his cabin, and is buried in Coloma.

2. William Alphonse Sutter was the son of John Sutter and came to Nevada County in 1854, where he died, and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery in Nevada City.

3. It is estimated that there are as many as 400 graves in one of the oldest cemeteries in the county, located on West Broad Street. Most of the early markers were made of wood or only wood crosses to begin with, which have been destroyed over the years by vandals and souvenir hunters.

4. It was the logging industry. The mining industry itself used a great deal of lumber to shore up the mines.

5. There were a large number of Chinese companies that leased the rights to mine there from the white owners
