Time for tough love

The excellent piece, “Are We A Judicial Monarchy?” by Jeff Pelline was right on target. Making judicial appointments isolates our courts from the citizens they serve and eliminates judicial accountability.

We, the People, have no voice in selecting appointed judges, and we are stuck with the people who are forced upon us by the governor. This defeats the democratic process and creates the possibility of loading the bench with agenda-driven idealists.

The judicial rulings in three criminal cases cited in Jeff Pelline’s column serve to illustrate the potential ramifications of appointing restorative justice proponents to superior court judgeships. Those defendants deserved more than they received. In those prior convictions, the judges failed to order appropriate treatment for the offenders or a meaningful prison experience to reinforce their rehabilitation.

Court-ordered treatment is appropriate for the first conviction. After five convictions for DUI, or seven parole violations, it is time for tough love! The final disposition of the child molestation tragedy is an outrage!

The judges’ decision in these and other criminal cases didn’t make Jeff Pelline’s family or my family any safer, and the convicted offenders didn’t learn anything. What have those judges accomplished for us?
