Thursday Night Marketplace wraps up season

Grass Valley’s summer events draw to an end this week after very successful season.

The Thursday Night Marketplace and Mill Street Farmers Market have celebrated summer on the streets of Downtown Grass Valley for the past 13 years.

The Thursday Night Marketplace is a locally-grown, Nevada County product, which is made up of all aspects of our unique community: business, farmers, crafters, entrepreneurs, art-makers, performers, non-profits and thousands of other participants.

Even with a bumpy economy, 2008 saw our weekly attendance increase considerably.

The large, contented crowds enjoyed a weekly respite from the high cost of living by buying farmer-direct, or eating local foods in our community dining area.

This year we showcased a wide variety of music and dance in our free concert series, which always features blues to bluegrass and Americana to samba.

This summer we saw an increase in families with children and we responded with a larger, child-safe play area and more activities for children.

This event series is presented by the Grass Valley Downtown Association for the merchants and restaurants of Grass Valley, in partnership with the Union and with support from the City of Grass Valley, Police, Fire and City Services.

In this day of multiple, online “Main Streets,” Grass Valley’s downtown is a not only a business hub, but culturally, ground zero, and, the newest “stay-cation” destination of Nevada County.

The combined efforts of the Grass Valley Merchants that host this event prove that the community that attends this weekly event represents more to them than just a “target market.”

We are already looking forward to next summer, to share with you an appreciation of our place and our time … when we meet again, on warm evenings June through August, downtown, where the historic buildings lean together like old friends.

Hope you had a good one.
