Three reading at poetry series

An open mike will be before and after guests Jean Varda, Emile Janicot and Joshua McKinney read at Friday’s Nevada County Poetry Series in Grass Valley.

Varda leads a free poetry and writing workshop at the Nevada County Library and a monthly workshop for fourth- and fifth-graders. Her poem “Shadow Fertile” was selected by the California State Poetry Society to appear in the next issue of California Quarterly.

A Nevada County native, Janicot is a bass player for two bands, team manager for Adrenalin Skateboards and a contributor to “Heckler.”

McKinney’s first book, “Saunter,” won the 2002 University of Georgia Press Poetry Competition. The California State University-Sacramento teacher has two poetry chapbooks out, and his work has appeared in publications including American Letters & Commentary, Denver Quarterly, Colorado Review and Poetry International.

The 7:30 p.m. reading is at the Center for the Arts, 314 W. Main St.

Admission is $7 general and $5 for seniors and students at the door. Refresh-ments are included.
