Think carefully before reopening mine

Recently, two “Other Voices” articles re: The reopening of the Idaho-Maryland Mine by Canadian-owned Emgold made me realize it is critical that we be informed and involved regarding this matter.

One article was rather caustic, toxic and insulting to the rational thinking mind. The author would have us believe the massive amounts of chemicals used in mining are harmless to us because I have an 8-ounce bottle of one of those chemicals in my medicine cabinet. He downplays the harm of cyanide.

Remember Summitville, Colo., and the mining disaster in which another Canadian company (Galactic Resources), operating under its U.S. subsidiary (Summitville Consolidated Mining Co.), walked away from its $3,000,000 bond before completion of the project, leaving U.S. taxpayers to foot the cyanide clean-up bill of $150,000,000?

Also, in dealing with a Canadian company, are we bound by NAFTA regulations, which have, in many legal-action cases, overridden local, state and federal law?

Finally, can a major mining operation within the city limits truly be considered an attraction of our town?

We should be listening closely to the advice of the other author, Greg Martin. To those making the final decision, do so based on in-depth research.
