There’s more than one way to get your music fix
“Mountain Beat Music,” hosted and produced by Nevada City’s April Miranda, is a three-hour weekly Internet radio program that broadcasts from the Grass Valley studios of the Open Mind Entertainment Network at http://www.openmindradio.com. The show highlights the music of original songwriters and musicians of Northern California and spotlights and promotes local artistic, creative community events and benefits.
Since its birth last year, the show has featured Northern California favorites, such as Mikail Graham, Ivan Najera and Saul Rayo. The 2008 calendar offers a cornucopia of original music and community events in Northern California.
And, as if she didn’t have enough to do, Miranda began offering a live-music venue on Thursday evenings in March. It’s called Songwriter Showcase, and Coffee Town (in BookTown Books) in Grass Valley is the venue. On the schedule so for are Grace Totherow, Stephen Holland and Kimberly Bass.
Miranda originally moved to Nevada County in 1999 and has been active in community events. “I love working with people to help bring awareness to community,” she said. “Over the years, I’ve enjoyed working as a volunteer for nonprofits such as SYRCL, Sierra Friends of Tibet and the Sierra Deep Ecology Institute. I have helped put on community fundraisers such as the Big Mountain Benefit and concerts. I participate by emceeing, stage management, catering and whatever else I can do to help. Music has always been in my life.
“Once I started talking with musician friends about my radio show, they began to be inspired about airing their music, and I began receiving CDs from all over. As the spark grew to a flame, I found the musicians that were interested and excited about my show were not only from the Nevada County area but also from Sacramento, Chico, Angels Camp, Mendocino, Berkeley and Arcata … and so the fire grew to include all of Northern California.”
