Therapy, preventive education covers the gamut of sports

Editor's note: Walt Abbey and his wife Jeanne operate A & A Physical Therapy in Grass Valley.

Physical therapy, athletic training and lymphedema therapy.

We start with a comprehensive evaluation that includes medical history, patient symptoms, objective testing and measurements, then a treatment plan.

We provide balance and fall risk training, and pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation for shoulders, knees, hips, spines, elbows and hands.

We were the first in Nevada County with manual therapy skills for spines and extremities, including joint replacement, and provide all therapy modalities.

We have a 1600 ft. exercise room and a warm-water (94 degrees F) exercise pool.

We believe strongly in pre-operative education and conditioning, especially to prevent low-back injury and knee injury among girls who play sports. A large portion of our work is with foot patients from our three local podiatrists.

Total joint replacements have evolved dramatically, and patients are returning to a much higher level of function than in 1974 when I treated my first patients.

December 6, 1982, my wife, Jeanne and I started the practice.

Our warm-water exercise pool, and our overhead treadmill frame with a patient harness to control weight-bearing and balance for neurologic and orthopedic patients.

Our staff of Carme Barsotti, Lin Coleman, Crystal Dickey, Paula Hajewski, Nick Lotze, Joyce Moore and Viktoria Werner bring a positive, fun-loving attitude of “laughter is the best medicine.”

Combined, we have expertise in all sports.

Yes. We always offer an appointment in two to three working days.

We accept and bill most insurance companies.

I earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Southern California in 1973 and have taken 15 units of college business courses.

After four years in the United States Navy in San Diego, we moved to Yuba City and then to Grass Valley in 1982. Out of 37 years in the field, I have been a manager or owner for 34 years.

I know the business from top to bottom and have seen many changes in health care over the years. I have always advocated quality patient care.

I have practiced therapy in all levels of patient care: Acute injury, trauma centers, rehabilitation hospitals, nursing homes, home health and out-patient clinics.

I have been the physical therapist at hundreds of athletic events (including 15 years with Nevada Union High School football) and worked in the training room at the University of Southern California.

I have treated athletes 8 years old to Olympic gold medal winners, professional golfers, professional football players and professional soccer and baseball players.

Lin Coleman is a Northern California expert in lymphedema therapy.
