Northern Mines Business and Professional Women honored six senior high school students recently whose essays were selected as the best in the “Real Women” creative writing competition.

The essay competition is part of the club’s 14th annual observance of National Women’s History Month. Students were asked to write about a local woman, still living, who made a difference in the community. The purpose of the competition was to encourage students to look at women they know and the many ways women contribute to our community. The competition was co-sponsored by The Union newspaper and the Grass Valley Elks.

The awards were announced at a banquet on March 14. The winners read their essays, standing alongside the woman they honored.
