The ‘purpose’ of marriage

I am puzzled by Tom McClintock’s assertions that “marriage is … the union of a man and a woman to summon new life into the world … our marriage laws are solely crafted to support this singular relationship and are inapplicable to any other partnership.”

Our marriage laws are not, in fact, so crafted: We do not strip heterosexual citizens in childless marriages of the legal protections of marriage. By McClintock’s logic, we should.

Should gay couples with children enjoy greater rights than childless married heterosexuals? Imagine the hue and cry such an amendment to our laws would raise!
