The perpetual campaigner

Tom McClintock’s quite the political campaign handicapper, especially when he’s running, which, of course, he almost always is.

He’s covering all angles. Bet heavily – but not all – on election to Congress. If that fails, maybe take a run at lieutenant governor – again. If that doesn’t work, there’s always the state Board of Equalization.

No matter, one of those offices guarantees another hefty paycheck from taxpayers. Even better, it guarantees another forum to attack government in general as well as the same public jobs that feed his family and pay him well. (He may favor abolition of the lieutenant governor’s position, but that doesn’t mean he’d turn down the paycheck!)

While most of his supporters scream about full-time politicians, they’re ranting about others, not him. They see no problem in McClintock hedging his bets by (1) continuing to collect from his Ventura County state Senate seat until January 2009 while (2) not being eligible to vote in his own Congressional race but (3) still claiming his mother’s Southern California house as his real residence and (4) retaining money for other future campaigns he’s sure to run.

After all, he’s a man of the people whose principles are rooted deeply in serving his constituents. Of course, that’s after he conveniently serves himself.
