The making of a scarecrow

Preschoolers celebrate the coming of autumn by making two scarecrows on Friday at Little Friends Child Development Center on Granholm Lane in Nevada City. Teacher Kitty Bumcrot shows students the center of a dried sunflower that will soon become a head for their scarecrows, as well as a

treat for visiting birds. The sunflowers were grown in the center’s garden

this summer. Bumcrot helps the students stuff the male scarecrow with

newspapers, while teacher Kristin Fraser dresses the female version. Students, with help from Bumcrot, put final touches on their scarecrows.
