The joke is on us

I was infuriated to read about the woman being indicted for cutting three trees down on federal land (The Union, Jan. 24). U.S. Attorney Gregory Brower’s statement that “It is important that public lands, which are held in trust for the benefit of all citizens, are appropriately protected by our land management agencies” is ludicrous. What a lie. And what a joke (on us).

The Bureau of Land Management has been giving away our public lands and national forests to lumber companies for pennies, and this has been going on for years. One only has to drive up through California, Oregon and many other states to see the miles and miles of devastation from clear cutting in our national forests.

How dare they, with their phony concern for the public welfare, now prosecute this poor woman for cutting down three trees when they’ve allowed millions of our publicly owned trees to be clear cut for profit, with most of the timber being shipped to foreign countries. It’s just another example of the total disregard of the public’s interests and the abuse of power by a federal bureau, which is funded by our taxes and whose employees are supposed to be working for us.

I have a solution: They should charge this lady the same amount they charge the lumber companies for each tree that size they cut down. The only problem is that we don’t make coins smaller than one cent.
