That smoke? A Calfire training burn in Yuba County

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is conducting training burns between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. this week through Friday.

Calfire’s Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit handles the burns at the University of California’s Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center field Station, located off Scott Grant Road, between Smartville and Dobbins, in southern Yuba county.

People can expect to see the smoke from Highway 20 and in Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, North San Juan, Smartville, Dobbins, Oregon House and French Corral.

Firefighters from across northern California receive training during the burns, which also manage weeds and improve wildlife habitat, Calfire officials said in a prepared statement.

For more information about the burns, call Gina Chamberlin at 277-2322.
