Take a stroll, see some new artwork

Friday nights in summer are the prefect time to stroll through art galleries in downtown Nevada City. Two galleries, Mowen Solinsky and Julie Baker Fine Art, are hosting receptions Friday, July 6.

Mowen Solinsky Gallery at 225 Broad St., is featuring Carol Aust, acrylic painter and altered book artist. While the reception and show opening runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Aust will give an art talk at 7:30 p.m. Her work is primarily figurative, revealing emotionally charged narrative fragments infused with mysterious tension and secrecy. Using strong, vibrant colors and whimsical figures, her work is both engaging and vulnerable, often placing her figures in precarious environments where anything could happen. Her paintings and books express a range of human longing. See the show through Aug. 2.

Julie Baker Fine Art is hosting a reception for the solo show, “David Leonard: These Days,” from 6-8 p.m. at 246 Commercial St. A realist painter of cityscapes, industrial landscapes and man-made objects, Leonard painstakingly depicts the density and ordered chaos of modern existence, brush stroke by brush stroke. His paintings provide a macro perspective with micro precision.
