Take a moment, get to know people beneath the clothes

When you go to the mall, you see trend after trend go out the door. There’s the punk style, the preppy style, the “hippie” style and so many others, you can’t even count them.

Who makes trends trends? Who gets to decide what’s “cool”? Is it the “popular” kids at school? The fashion designers? The people who actually have enough money to have cool clothes?

What about people who are on the lower end of society’s “totem pole”? What are they supposed to wear? Are we to dismiss them without even getting to know them, just because they don’t register high enough on our “trendiness scale”? But if you do take a moment to actually get to know the “scrubbier” kids, you might find that they are just as genuine, if not more, as the kids with the nice clothes and perfect hair. They want to be loved for who they are, and as you will find, it’s hard not to.

Starting at Nevada Union as a freshman this year, coming from a private school where everyone loves everyone, it’s hard to see the different cliques hurt those who don’t quite “measure up.” If you give them a minute to explain themselves, you might find, underneath the “uncool” clothes, a really great friend.
