Support Senator Sheila Kuehl’s bill SB840. A member of our family this past year, having been hospitalized without benefit of health insurance, had to sell their home to pay medical bills. Another member of the same family has since been diagnosed with breast cancer and has gone through surgery with follow-up radiation treatment. Any funds left from the sale of their home will now be eaten up with the additional medical bills. The benefit of years of hard work has been blown away.

This is the experience of many of the 45 million people in this country that cannot afford health insurance. I have had many relatives cared for under the Canadian system and I don’t know anyone who had to sell their home to pay their medical bills.

The Band-Aid approach to fixing health care in California by the governor and the leaders of the Senate and Legislature will not provide the cost savings needed. We need to get the insurance companies and drug lobbies out of the loop and to use the 35 to 40 percent of the health care dollars eaten up by administration to provide health care to all Californians.
