Support Foothill Theatre

As a follow-up to the Aug. 6 Union article reporting my comments made at the Foothill Theatre community meeting, I would like to clarify my position.

First, even though I am, indeed, a board member with Music in the Mountains, I was not speaking on their behalf. I was there and spoke representing my own personal opinions, gathered from 30 years experience in arts management and governance. That perspective leads me to believe that Foothill has had three major problems in the past: a board that’s too small, a lack of management (not artistic) discipline, and having the artistic director also serve as the business manager.

The final point has been corrected in the past few years, and the other two still need to be addressed. It appears to me that Foothill is addressing those two points as part of their current campaign to erase their ongoing deficit and get the ship on a steady keel. I wholeheartedly support having a professional theater company in our community, want that company to be Foothill, and believe that the best way to accomplish that is to help them in their current drive.
