Students invited to apply for composers program

By The Union staff

Sign-ups for the October 2005-June 2006 Young Composers Program start now, with Sept. 28 being the deadline.

This popular educational program is in its fourth year and is organized by Music in the Mountains and the Nevada County Composers Cooperative for students ranging from middle school to college sophomores.

Students will be working with leading composers Jerry Grant, Howard Hersh, Jay Sydeman and Mark Vance of the Nevada County Composers Cooperative. It will include a series of composition seminars presented twice each month and culminates with a concert of student works in June.

The selected young composers will create new works for three performance presentations. Short pieces will be presented in January and March, with Music in the Mountains Summer Festival concert for larger works in early June. They will have the opportunity to write for any combination of woodwinds, strings, piano, voice or choir.

The sessions will all be held Saturday mornings at the Nevada Union High School. Application forms for the $75 program are available at the Music in the Mountains business office, 530 Searls Ave., Suite A, in Nevada City.

Call Kathy Lisbony at 265-6173 or Mark Vance at 478-0776 for more information.
