Stepping up to find a solution

This is an open letter to the Chicago Park Hornets 4-H Club and all of the other worthy community groups who have used the sale of fireworks in order to fund their activities.

Yes, many of the traditional methods of raising funds require extensive labor and earn limited revenue. As a community, however, we must find a more creative alternative that doesn’t have the potential to jeopardize the homes and forests of our beautiful county.

With that in mind, I suggest that we stop our bickering and step up to the plate. So, here’s my pledge: I would be willing to personally donate $100 to the Hornets 4-H and to any other four local charitable groups who (a) have in past years found it necessary to sell fireworks and (b) would be willing to forego selling fireworks this year in lieu of other methods of fundraising.

So, how about it, Nevada County? Isn’t it worth a small monetary commitment to your favorite local charitable organization in order to have a little more peace of mind this 4th of July? Perhaps The Union could run a list of those groups who traditionally sell fireworks and are opting out this year.

If we deem it necessary to deny organizations this particular method of fundraising, then let’s also share in some of the accountability by helping them to recoup their profits.
