Stem cell rhetoric

There has been much rhetoric lately about embryonic stem cells. Of President Bush’s approach to embryonic stem cell research (ESCR), John Kerry has said, “He’s not acknowledging the truth of science ….” and “…He is making the wrong choice to sacrifice science for extreme right-wing ideology.”

Would you want a Ppesident who turns his back on science to placate an “extreme ideology?” I wouldn’t!

Is “Dubya” turning his back on science in order to further his “extreme” ideology? What does science tell us about this ESCR?

Fact: Every human embryo is a unique life and is fully and substantially human.

Fact: We were all once embryos.

Fact: DNA taken from an embryonic human is indistinguishable from that taken after it is allowed to be born.

Fact: When embryonic stem cells are harvested the destroyed embryo was just two weeks from having a beating heart.

Fact: ESCR kills a human life.

Facts show Mr. Bush is acknowledging the scientific truth. In contrast, Mr. Kerry’s attitude is based on a lack of understanding of facts and a distinct disregard for the dignity due every human life. Mr. Bush may be wrong about many other issues, but this isn’t one of them.
