PREP ROUNDUP: Bear River roars past Mesa Verde in season opener

Bear River's boys basketball team tipped off the season with an outstanding offensive showing on the road against the Mesa Verde Mavericks.

The Bruins had four players score in double figures as they raced past the Mavericks, 93-71, Tuesday night.

The 93 points is the most by a Bear River boys team since 2012, when the Bruins beat Valley Christian, 96-73.

Brad Smith, 6-foot, 3-inch forward, led the offensive onslaught, scoring a game-high 30 points and pulling down 26 rebounds, eight of which were offensive.

Junior guard Justin Powell added 23 points. Junior Reid Zolldan netted 15 points. Junior guard Caleb Lowry added 14 points. And, sophomore forward Jace Rath chipped in eight points.

Bear River jumped out to a 26-15 first quarter lead before taking a 51-38 advantage into halftime. The Bruins put the game away with a big third quarter and cruised down the stretch.

The Bruins enter the season with a nine-man roster, including eight juniors and one sophomore.

Next up for Bear River (1-0) is the Mount Shasta Tournament Thursday through Saturday. The Bruins open the tourney at 5:30 p.m. today against Klamath Falls.

WOODCREEK 51, NEVADA UNION 43

The Miners and Timberwolves faced off for a second time in four days and for the second time, NU walked off the court in defeat.

After falling to Woodcreek in the Jack Scott Tournament Consolation Championship Saturday, the Miners faced off with their former league foe in a non-league bout at Woodcreek Tuesday.

Nevada Union fell behind 12-5 after one quarter and trailed 26-17 at halftime. NU would play better in the second half, but couldn't get any closer than five points and eventually fell by eight.

Leading the Miners was senior guard Ryan Werner with 16 points, and freshman forward Milo Goehring with nine points.

The Miners (2-3) will now turn their attention to the Nevada Union Invitational Tournament which tips off at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

FOREST LAKE CHRISTIAN 38, WESTERN SIERRA 34

The Lady Falcons opened their season with a hard-fought road win over Western Sierra Collegiate Academy Tuesday night.

Leading the way for FLC was Amber Jackson with 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Lily sween added 16 points and four rebounds. Ellie Wood chipped in six points and pulled down eight rebounds. And, Bella O'Neill grabbed nine rebounds to go with four points.

The Lady Falcons (1-0) will now head to the Marysville Tournament which runs Thursday through Saturday.
