‘SPIRITFEST’ features music, art; Anne Lamott guest speaker at Wordslingers Festival

The gala preview reception for the Open Studios Art Tour, which includes two weekends of viewing works by at least 75 area artists, will be on Oct. 7 at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.

The Open Studios Art Tour will be on Oct. 9-10 and Oct. 16-17 in 53 Western Nevada County studios.

The free preview reception at the Center for the Arts (314 W. Main St.) is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The preview exhibit will be displayed there from Monday through Oct. 15.

“SPIRITFEST,” a musical and visual celebration on Oct. 8, will benefit SPIRIT Mental Health Peer Empowerment Center. The celebration is from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.

Music acts include Spirit Drum Circle, the Lisa Stine Trio, the Lorraine Gervais Trio, Paul Kamm and Eleanor MacDonald, Jukolin and Dakota Sid and the Badlands Serenaders.

A silent auction will feature paintings, drawings and sculpture created by area residents challenged by mental illness and by others who support them. The silent auction will close at 9 p.m.

“SPIRITFEST” is organized by volunteers at the nonprofit SPIRIT Mental Health Peer Empowerment Center in the Brunswick Basin. The center offers no-cost counseling services and support.

Admission is $20, which includes buffet snacks. Beverages, including beer and wine, will be sold.

Anne Lamott will be the guest speaker during Literature Alive!’s annual Wordslingers Festival on Oct. 9 at the Miners Foundry Cultural Center.

Workshops led by local writers will be “Writing Fiction” by Louis B. Jones from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., “Poetry from the Ground Up” by Molly Fisk and Maxima Kahn, and “Speak Your Truth” for teens by Grace Totherow.

The latter two workshops are both from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

“Writing Fiction” and “Poetry from the Ground Up” are $20 each; the “Speak Your Truth” is $10.

Admission to Lamott’s talk at 7:30 p.m. is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Advance tickets are at The Book Seller, Harmony Books and Odyssey Books.

The Foundry is at 325 Spring St. in Nevada City.
