South county home searched for evidence of missing woman

A Lake of the Pines home was searched today as part of a 22-year-long missing-person investigation.

According to an Auburn Police Department statement, the home was being searched for possible evidence in the disappearance of Janet Kovacich.

“Today we executed a search warrant in Nevada County in the hopes (of) obtaining evidence in this case,” the police statement said. “Over the next few weeks we plan to seek and execute additional warrants in this continuing investigation in the hopes of learning additional details and seek evidence in Janet’s disappearance.”

Kovacich, a former Combie Road resident who moved to Auburn, disappeared Dec. 8, 1982. She left behind a husband and two children.

In January 1995, a Placer County judge officially declared Kovacich dead, after being asked to do so by the victim’s mother. Her husband, a Placer County Sheriff’s deputy at the time, protested the ruling.

Those with information about Kovacich’s disappearance are asked to call Capt. Valerie Harris at 823-4237, ext. 203, or Detective Sgt. Chris Reams at 823-4237, ext. 221.
