Soroptomist International of the Sierra Foothills
Soroptimist International of the Sierra Foothills is now viewing gardens to select for the May 2007 Tour. They have signed contracts with nine garden owners for the May 2006 Tour. “We are looking for variety,” says garden 2006 tour chairperson Nancy Troutner.
“People that buy garden tour tickets like to see ideas that can be use in their own yards.” The club tries to have a variety from small gardens to large professionally designed gardens and anything in between. We want to view some whimsical, some formal, some with great water features, some with heritage plants and all interesting to the eye.” Your garden may be just right for the annual Garden Tour in May, 2007 or may be scheduled a few years out. The tour is always the weekend after Mother’s Day. Variety, quality of garden, accessibility, and location in the county, are all considerations in making the decisions of when a quality garden is placed on the tour.
The tour is the main fundraiser for Soroptimist International of the Sierra Foothills each year. Their profits are put back into the community with club focused projects. Some of these projects are; “Read Me a Story,” helping to build a garden at the Grass Valley School District’s Preschool, high school scholarships, supporting the Pal Program. They also sponsor a room at the Kare Crisis Nursery Inc, support Child Advocates of Nevada County, and the American Red Cross to name a few.
If you or someone you know has an interesting garden, Terry Ferguson, the 2007 garden tour coordinator, would like to hear from you. She also has tickets available for the May 20 -21 garden tour. For more information call 271-3853. If you would like more information about this women’s service organization visit http://www.sierrasoroptimist.org for membership and garden tour information.
Also, the club will join 400 other Soroptimists at the Sierra Nevada Region of Soroptimist International of the Americas, April 21-23, John Ascuaga’s Nugget, in Sparks, Nev. Local members will join Soroptimist from 58 other clubs for this three-day annual event.
The conference will highlight a year’s worth of community service by local Soroptimist clubs, and projects from Soroptimist International of the Americas and Soroptimist International.
