‘Socialist’ isn’t a dirty word

In a speech at the Republican National Convention, former California governor, Pete Wilson, implied that Barack Obama was a Socialist (oh that he were!), as if Socialist is a dirty word. May I note that our history includes many Socialist heroes. I will highlight three.

We know that Helen Keller overcame terrible handicaps to become a world-renowned lecturer; she was also a life-long radical Socialist.

George Orwell, author of “Animal Farm” and “1984;” yep, you got it: A Socialist.

And who knows the name Edward Bellamy? He was a Socialist who wrote the book “Looking Backwards” and, oh yes, the American pledge of allegiance. And he was no godless Socialist; he was a Baptist.
