Snow days: Public vs. private sector

My copy desk chief just left to help one of our copy editors whose car is stuck in her driveway as yet another layer of snow covers the Grass Valley/Nevada City area. Earlier today, he picked up our Prospector editor. I made it to work just fine but then smacked the rear end of my car into a garbage dumpster as I was fish-tailing my way through our parking lot. But despite the snowfall, all but one of our newsroom employees made it in today and, of course, we’re working hard to cover the latest winter blast. Then there’s elements of the public sector. First, I want to offer kudos to the cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City for being open for business today. In fact, I saw trash truck on the job early this morning in Nevada City. On the other hand, the county and the schools we’re ready to call a day before 8 a.m. I know schools say they are concerned about the safety of the students but why can’t teachers try to come into work like folks in the private sector? Is it a union deal? I also wonder why the county (with the exception of public safety and the courts) was so eager to call it a snow day. It’s my firm belief that the public sector workers should try just as hard as private sector workers to make it to work when it snows. It’s the least they can do for the taxpayers.
