Smiths named Family of the Year by fair board

The Smiths of Nevada City ” dad Chuck, mom Tammy, daughters Kaytlin and Emilee and son Jacob ” will be honored as the Family of the Year at the Nevada County Fair, which runs Aug. 8 through Aug. 12 at the county fairgrounds.

“Their farm outside Nevada City has always been a place where a youngster could raise a pig to exhibit at the fair,” said Karen Henderson, director of the Nevada Union High School FFA, who nominated the Smiths for the award.

“Every year for at least six years, we’ve had extra pigs,” Tammy Smith said. “They are available to young people who want to raise an animal as a project.”

The Smith Family will be honored at the opening ceremonies on Aug 8.

They also will receive free admission to the fair, parking passes, free carnival rides and admission to all five nights of arena events. Shaffers Originals of Grass Valley will create a family portrait to commemorate the Smiths’ selection as Family of the Year.

The Nevada County Fairgrounds is at 11228 McCourtney Road, just west of Grass Valley. For more information, visit or call 273-6217.
