Smartsville mother arrested for DUI

A Smartsville woman remains in county jail after allegedly driving drunk and crashing into a tree with her two children in the car.

A caller from the 14000 block of Greenhorn Road called 911 at about 12:40 a.m. Thursday to report hearing a vehicle accident and hearing someone screaming and crying.

When a Nevada County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the scene, no one was in the vehicle, according to dispatch reports.

The driver, who was identified as Brooke Elizabeth Mayfield, 30, allegedly was driving while under the influence and ran into a tree, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol.

Mayfield allegedly got herself and her two children out of the car and was trying to walk home when she was stopped by a CHP officer.

She was complaining of pain to her ribs, contusions and a right wrist sprain. A 7-year-old child was uninjured, but a 4-year-old child had a laceration to the forehead.

Based on the injuries, it was questionable as to whether the child was secured in a seatbelt, said CHP Officer Cindy Morgan.

Mayfield was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and driving under the influence, causing bodily injury. She was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail.
