Smartsville man faces rape, sodomy charges in Nevada County

A Smartsville man facing accusations that he tied a woman to a bed and raped her remained in the Nevada County Jail on Sunday on a $1 million bond, authorities said.

Matthew Charles Roberts, 32, faces charges including rape, sodomy and kidnapping in connection with the alleged Wednesday assault, Nevada County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Tripp said.

According to Tripp, an argument between Roberts and the woman began Tuesday. That led Roberts to drive her early Wednesday in his vehicle down an isolated road.

At some point the woman tried to run from Roberts, who caught her and took her to a house where he tied her to a bed and assaulted her, Tripp added.

“He kept her against her will for some time,” the lieutenant said.

Roberts released the woman and threatened her, leading her to wait until Saturday to report the incident, Tripp said.

Authorities then began their investigation and arrested Roberts.

“They found a number of firearms in the house,” Tripp said.

Roberts is charged with rape, sodomy, sexual penetration, kidnapping, false imprisonment, assault, attempting to prevent or dissuade a victim/witness, threatening to commit a crime, ex-felon with a firearm and two other charges, jail records state.
