‘Skin of Our Teeth’ opens at Nevada Union

Thornton Wilder’s complex “The Skin of Our Teeth,” which won the American playwright his third Pulitzer Prize in 1943, previews tonight at the Don Baggett Theatre. Twenty-five Nevada Union (High School) Thespian Society members are in the play.

The playwright called “The Skin of Our Teeth,” according to the Thornton Wilder Society Web page, “the most ambitious project I have ever approached.”

Play director Theo Black, who is drama teacher Nan Wiik’s assistant, chose this play because “it shows humanity’s continual struggle for survival, both with nature and in the context of war.”

A comedy, “The Skin of Our Teeth” is about the quintessential Antrobus family of Excelsior, N.J. – parents George and Maggie, children Henry and Gladys, and their maid, Sabina. Depicting a history of mankind, the family simultaneously lives in present day, the Ice Age, Biblical times and World War II.

The cast includes Zach Mahoney, Joel Heinrich and David Bennett as George Antrobus, who progresses from caveman to president of the human race; Christina Tobie, Sarah Colwell and Beth Segura as the sickly-sweet tigress Maggie Antrobus; and Stephanie Bayne, Katherine Carlsberg and Amanda Ratti as seductive Sabina. Actors sharing the same character play different time periods during the three acts.
