Skateboard class offered at SoCal middle school

FILLMORE, Calif. (AP) ” Skateboarding has been added to gym classes at Fillmore Middle School in Southern California.

Teacher Dave MacDonald came up with the idea and, now, seventh and eighth graders get three weeks of skateboarding basics in addition to hockey and soccer.

Officials say schools in 10 states have adopted skateboarding classes.

The first thing taught is the right way to fall ” on knee pads, arms up. Then, the kids learn balance and turns.

“That’s what it’s all about, getting them to do something they didn’t think they could do,” MacDonald said. “Here you’ve got this kid who might not be athletic, but a child who’s having a blast.”
