Showdown looms over Orchard Springs campground

A showdown looms Wednesday when the Nevada Irrigation District is slated to act on the status of long-term tenants and the concessionaire of Orchard Springs Resort and campground at Rollins Lake.

NID terminated the lease of concessionaire Bill Hanan Jan. 25, for not having insurance and failing to pay campground royalties to the district in a timely manner. They also sent 25 long-term campers eviction notices, but recently gave them until April 15 to sign an agreement to leave.

At an NID committee meeting today, District General Manager Ron Nelson said 14 of the 25 tenants have already gone, but only three of the remaining 11 have signed agreements to leave. Peggy Davidson, NID’s recreation manager, said the deadline for the remaining eight to sign is today and that they could be evicted Thursday if they do not.

At the same meeting, deposed concessionaire Hanan made a proposal to get his campground operations lease back. Right after the meeting, NID Assistant General Manager Tim Crough said Hanan’s lawyer, Chuck Farrar, has threatened to sue NID challenging the original lease termination and any attempt to evict him.

That contact by Farrar with NID Attorney Jeff Meith caused the committee to balk from any action today, and for board members to bring it up as possible litigation at 9 a.m. Wednesday in a closed session at NID’s regular meeting.

Also vying for a chance to run the campground is Ed Vincent, who lives nearby and was the concessionaire from 1993 to 2003. A third possibility is for NID to run the resort and campground this year.
